Yet Another Intent, Lost

Apparently there's a twitter thing where people are reading one poetry book a day during August. That seems all sorts of wrong to me. Not that I don't support reading and all, but a book a day? A whole poetry book a day? I mean, I suppose I could speed through a short poetry book in a day, but there's no way I could give each poem, or the book as a whole, the attention it deserves. Not if it's a good book of poems anyway, and I like to spend my time reading good books.

So instead, I'm starting off the new year right by reading a book a week. Maybe it'll be poetry, maybe fiction, maybe some kind of philosophical or religious treatise, who knows. This year, I'm reading a book a week, and documenting it here. (You didn't know it was a new year, did you? Well, it is. I just had a birthday, my 37th, and that's how I mark the years.)

As for the rejections, well, they're still rolling in, though not as quickly or in as large quantities. I haven't been sending out work as much. To be honest, I haven't been writing as much, at least not finished things that I feel like sending out. Things are brewing; I'd like to give them time to brew well. Somebody somewhere said or wrote something sometime about needing to read in order to write. Probably lots of people have said such things. Why? Because it's true. So, here's to turning one's attention to reading, not publishing, not even collecting rejections. Just reading, nourishing oneself with the written word. The writing, if one is a writer, follows, and follows well.
